William Armstrong History

The following insert is taken from History of Scotland-William Armstrong of Sorbietrees, Liddesdale-An Untimely Death.

Just south of Newcastleton in the Scottish Border valley of Liddesdale stands the substantial house of Sorbietrees. Today it is both a working farm and a rest, repose and base for visitors bent on exploring the beauties of the Scottish Border Country: invigorating walks over the Border fells, a taste of Border history in the lands where the Border Reiver once ruled supreme, cycling and horse-riding in the pleasant valleys of the burns, rivers and extensive woodland. What is seen of Sorbietrees today belies the violent history of its past. It is peaceful now, and rightly so, but in the hey-day of the Border Reivers it was home to a branch of the most notorious clans of the Scottish Borders, the Armstrongs. The present house stands on the site of a Pele or fortified tower of massive strength. Three stories high with walls of immense thickness, it screamed defiance at any who dared to invade its ground.
